I think it is a big deal, but not for the reasons many may think. While the superficial side of it contains "bragging rights", I feel that children with a higher IQ may need to be challenged in intellectually. Each child learns differently and the child with a high IQ is no different. While their intelligence may be high, and they can understand concepts, they are still their age and in comes the sting; how to incorporate advanced learning concepts and problem solving the child may be ready for, yet balance it with other aspects of the child that may not be so advanced but right on target with their physical age.
Two of my children were offered the opportunity to skip grades and I declined. While they were more than ready intellectually to skip one or more grades, emotionally they were right on que with their own peers.
Balance is important and if parents are seeking to get their children tested just to be able to say they have a "genius" in the family, they do the child a disservice.

I hear you. On so many levels. It's very difficult to navigate the water between the whirpool of driving them forward and the whirlpool of failing to engage them enough. I too have a little boy who I can't get to *stop* reading, long enough to sleep. How do I get him to read? I put a book within reach of his arm. Hehehe.
