Barbara -

I've heard of and tried vinegar as a fabric softener, too. But I've also read that it doesn't work in very hard water, which we have, and may even be counter-productive in that instance - which would go along with the results I had. <sigh>

I sure wish there were Trader Joe's around here... I miss them for a lot of reasons!

If you have a Trader Joe's in the vicinity of where you're traveling, you might want to try their store-brand phosphate-free detergent. I use it with my son, whose skin cannot handle perfumes, etc. and we've had great luck with it. It's not real expensive, either. I use vinegar instead of fabric softener and that seems to help rinse the soap out of the clothes so it doesn't build up and stop being effective.

Looking forward to your carnival next week!

I've made some homemade detergent too using borax, washing soda and part of a used bar of soap. It works excellent I must say, but this spring when it raind, since the homemade stuff really has no scent, my clotehs had that fishy smell after being washed (city water drawn from a lake). I've gone back to the store bougth stuff, but think I will keep the homemade stuff on hand to as a laundry booster.
