Great blog post! My daughter has stomach problems after HFCS too! After many doctor visits and food diaries I discovered that it was HFCS causing her stomach aches.

Interesting stuff. My wife has been working on reducing the amount of HFCS in our house, though neither of us have noticed anything particularly negative with HFCS. But we are trying to get back to more natural, and hopefully healthier, options in our food.

Hi,
My google alert for HFCS picked up your post. Yes, Audrae Erickson, pres of the CRA, certainly does scurry around cyberspace. As for HFCS and sucrose, being metabolically the same, they are not. Take the variant
HFCS-55 which is used to sweeten all national brands of soda. it's composition is 55%fructose:45%glucose. This appears to be just 5% different than sucrose, until you do the math. 55%:45% = 55/45 = 1.22.
This means that in every can of Mountain Dew (bottled in the USA). There is, compared to glucose, 22% more fructose. Delve into the research and you'll find that it is the fructose moiety that leads to long term health hazard. By the way, in young children, excess fructose elevates blood pressure which might explain why your children went zany after drinking HFCS sweetened beverages. Both sucrose and HFCS contain fructose, but it is the imbalance of simple sugars that has wreaked havoc on our waistline, livers, and arteries. An excellent summary of the metabolic dangers of excess fructose has been written by Dr. Dana Flavin, M.D.
I appreciated reading your article. While I am concerned about the environmental impact of mono corn agriculture, I am more militant about the health issues. Type II diabetes used to be known as AODM, adult onset diabetes mellitus. Now, sadly, type II diabetes is of great concern to pediatricians.
Here are some products that contain HFCS that aren't usually mentioned.
Geriatric sustenance formulas, chewing gum, toopthpaste, cough syrup.

I saw the link to this on Facebook so thought I'd come over and take a look.
Coincidentally, my daughter recently noticed that foods with HFCS are consistently causing her stomach problems, which she has had chronically her entire life. After she mentioned it, I took a look at my coffee creamer, which tends to make me feel a little nauseous if I have it in several cups. Guess what the MAIN ingredient is? HFCS.
